Sarracenia purpurea (Purple Pitcher Plant) - 10 seeds

This carnivorous species actually traps insects as a source of additional nutrients! To do this, the plant uses its folded leaves or pitchers which are about six inches long. The upright leaves are half full of water, with sticky juice near the top. The juice attracts insects, which crawl into the pitcher and become trapped and are then consumed by the plant. The pitchers are slender at the basal rosette, rapidly becoming swollen higher up. They are green with purple tints and the plant itself only grows to about six inches in height. Beautiful maroon or reddish-purple flowers appear in spring and are about 2-3 inches wide and stand about 10-15 inches above the plant. The natural habitant of this unique plant are on sphagnous bogs and peaty barrens. They are native to eastern USA and Canada, and have now become naturalized in many parts of the world. These will make a great addition to any garden and can even be grown as a most unusual houseplant! Unique and fun to grow, this beautiful specimen is actually not that hard from seed if proper cultural practices are followed.
